I take a stand for creating a Gaian Constitution.
The idea came to me when I was doing Dragon Speaking in a Possibility lab. Suddenly it flew out of my mouth: “And I am also here to take down the CIA and create a Gaian Constitution.”
What?
Dragon Speaking is when you let your archetypal anger speak through you, and amazing clarity about what is needed often comes through. In this case it was an entirely new idea: Creating a planetary constitution. During the Possibility Lab I recorded an interview with Clinton Callahan, the founder of Possibility Management, about this idea (below).
As I thought more about it, it made a lot of sense. Down through history, starting with the Magna Carta in 1215 (Medieval Latin for “Great Charter”), constitutions have been used to reign in the power abuse of the elite and protect the people against the king or the state.
If we look at the history of humankind, the main source of terrorism has been state terror (Think Stalin, Hitler, the Red Khmers etc.). Thus, protecting the public from the excesses of their rulers has always been a necessity and with the advent of digital surveillance, AI and robot armies the need is all the more pressing today.
Other pressing reasons to rethink the foundation of society comes from population growth, overconsumption of resources, proliferation of dangerous technologies and an economic system that concentrates wealth in the wrong places. Unless these tendencies are controlled, the emergence of a high-tech authoritarian global regime is almost inevitable.
Add to this the fundamental conflict between:
- Modern culture, based in a materialistic, hierarchical and patriarchal worldview that considers the Earth a resource to exploit, and has money and power as its central values, and the emerging
- Gaian Culture, based in a holistic, non-authoritarian, Archan worldview, that reveres the Earth, Gaia, as a cosmic being and has free will and creation as its central values.
and the differences between the two paths of evolution of society could hardly be more extreme.
The current system mainly works well in the short term for the 1%, or perhaps the top 10% if we are generous. For the bottom 90% of society (measured in wealth) the system is not in their interest, and they ought to have a clear common interest in stopping the madness and creating a world that works for everyone. In the long term the current system is doomed to fail for all. Among the very rich, it seems that some think they can escape the inevitable consequences by being rich and others know how it will end, but have chosen to enjoy their first-class ticket to the apocalypse.
Who will Create the Constitution
How does one create a constitution for an entire planet?
I do not know. But it begins with talking about the idea.
The vision I have for how it COULD go, is to begin with creating hybrid (online/offline) events, that would allow a core group to gather physically and allow people all over the world to participate virtually. This group would dive into the different topics, hold space for healing the wounds of everyone participating and drafting proposals for the different part.
My proposal is to articulate:
- A general preamble
- Three principles
- Five priorities
- Ten goals
In a brief and easily understandable document that groups all over the Earth can rally behind.

Healing and Gaian Synthesis
The point of the process is to find the common ideals that we as human beings can agree on. If for instance you do NOT know if you are going to be born rich or poor, male or female in a future life, how would you design the future society?
That is a good starting point for a conversation about principles.
And then there are the wounds that we all carry within. When witnessing the current polarized discourse in society, it quickly becomes apparent how often it is peoples wounded parts that are attacking each other. Rarely do opposing parties in debates really listen to each other. It is mainly about weaponizing information to knock out your opponents.
Creating common grounds for an enlightened society cannot happen in such an atmosphere. Creating space for our wounded parts and listening deeply to everyone, pursuing Truth and Reconciliation and generally bringing healing into all aspects of our beings, is needed as part of this journey.
The only way this can truly work, is by creating space for a genuine SYNTHESIS. By synthesis is meant “the recognition of higher principles that we all can agree on as meaningful, and willingly orient ourselves towards”.
One such principle could be that “Gaia is a living being, inside of which we all live, breathe and have our being”. Another principle could be to “always respect the free will of another sovereign being”. A third principle could be to “never allow money to be separated from what it represents, and thus become an object of speculation.”
Creating a constitution that protects such fundamental principles, and ensuring that no laws are passed that violate them, would provide a huge protection for people and planet.
Lets Agree to Disagree
It would likely also be the case that people of different political orientation (left/right) might agree on a principle, but interpret its meaning slightly different.
And that is ok.
Once the main principle of, for instance “protecting the free will and integrity of all beings” has become a fundamental value, we can agree to disagree on exactly what that means in the everyday life.
But by enacting it as a fundamental value, protected by the constitution, the powers in this world that thrive on undermining and subjugating peoples free will, in myriads of ways, will find that it is (more or less) game over for them.
How to begin the process?
The beginning of a process like this, is to simple talk about it and imagine that it is possible.
The next step will be to hold space for processes where we start imagining what it could look like, create a first draft, and deal with all the difficult emotions and reactions that such a process will inevitably spark. Because opening up for the possibility of a future of great beauty will trigger the pain of all the hardship that everyone has experienced during their journey here on Earth.
The way I view this could play out is to rally the worlds NGO’s and Communities behind the vision and my belief is that if we can get around 80% of the worlds NGO’s to support this vision, then the political system can no longer ignore it, and a popular pressure can be created that can pave the way for its adoption and ratification.
Beware, however, that such a constitution will up-end the entire political system, as the new constitution will become the future reference point for all legality on the planet.
Also: There will probably be authoritarian regimes who will chose to complete ignore its existence, but they will not be able to do so in the long run, if their populations want to be part of a global community of nations committed to a new set of enlightened principles and ideals.
To create a Gaian constitution, we need to understand who it is for, and who our natural allies therefore are: This constitution is for the common man, woman and child on the planet, to protect them from the powerful and protect the planet from corporate greed and abuse.
Everyone who currently hold power and wealth will most likely be opposed to the idea, so do not be surprised at the level of resistance that the idea may encounter. In fact: When the idea begins to meet serious resistance, then rejoice, for it is the sign that the house of card, that is Patriarchal Empire, is beginning to crumble.
